Birthday 4.5!

Yesterday was my birthday and I had a great 4.5-mile run!

It was absolutely gorgeous out! Sunny, blue skies, warm...perfect! I set out for my run a little after noon.

Pre-run, rockin' my new Bondi Band!

I actually remembered my MP3 player this time! I felt great and energized for the entire run. I didn't want to run too fast, but I was running faster than my last long run. I guess I had birthday energy running through me.

Post run...sweaty and red faced. :)

Here are my stats. Pretty good!

I am so pumped that I can run 4.5 miles nonstop and feel great doing it. Next week is 5 miles!!

I am also excited to write up my review of my new Bondi Band. Stay tuned cause there will be a giveaway too! My very first! Woot woot!

I love Cherries!

I was awarded the Cherry On Top Award from Andrew at Running Man Wannabe and Tressa and Jesse at Training w/ a Track Coach and His Adorable Wife!

The Rules:

1. Answer this question: If you had the chance to go back and change one thing in your life, would you and what would it be?

2. The second thing you have to do is, pick 6 people and give them this award. You then have to inform the person that they have gotten this award.

3. The third and final thing is, thank the person who gave you the award.

Answers:

1. I honestly can't think of anything that I would go back and change in my life. I am so happy with my life right now and I think everything that I did in the past, led to my life now. But, if I HAD to pick something I would change, it would be when I was younger...I think 1st grade, someone (not naming names) let somone else cut my beautiful long hair into a mullet! Yuck!

2. And the award goes to....in no particular order! :) I chose these bloggers because they all rock!

~Miss Shell Bell from Shelby Stidham

~Elizabeth from Canyon Cairns

~Emz from If I can't convince you--I'll at least confuse you

~Heather from WifeMomRunner

Hamot 5K Race Report

Race report time!!

The Hamot 10K...that's the name of the race...was yesterday morning. There was a 10K and a 5K. I did the 5K.

I woke up to rain. It was coming down pretty hard when I was getting ready. The 10K was to start at 8 and the 5K at 8:15. So the plan was to pick up S at 7:30 and head down. I got up and got ready, ate a yummy Cliff bar, and did some stretching. I grabbed a hat because of the rain and left my MP3 player at home...on purpose this time!

In the car...ready to go!

Here are S and I prerace. No one came with us to take race pics so we got one before we left.

We got down to the race and it wasn't raining anymore! It didn't rain the entire time. I was glad about that. It was cloudy and cool though which made for great running weather.

Down at the race!

We heard an announcement the the 10K would be starting 10 minutes later at 8:10, and that the 5K would still start at 8:15. I had to go to the bathroom because apparently before races I have to do that at least 3 times! Thankfully we found porta-potties. I got in line and S ran to the car to take the camera back. As I was walking back to meet S I heard the horn blow for the start of the 10K. We got up to the starting line and ran into a few friends. They people yelled for the 5Kers to get to the line. S and I were standing on the curb talking to our friends and out of nowhere the horn blew! Um, thanks for the warning! So we just started running!

I was probably in the first 3rd of people in line, and when the running started, two women directly in front of me proceeded to walk! Really! If you plan on walking, get to the back! So I just took off and dodged people left and right. The course was an out and back. I thought it was going to be more flat than it was. It wasn't as hilly as my last race though. When you drive these streets, you don't notice the little inclines.

I was feeling good and running away. Once I got going, there really weren't too many people around me. There was a little girl, probably 8 years old, that was a few steps ahead of me. I got to the turn around place and was excited. I started looking for S. We saw each other and cheered each other on. A little after this, I got a little tired because we had a little incline, but I pushed through.

Right after that, the little girl in front of me said to herself "I'm tired!". She was really running hard! A minute later she said it again. I told her she was doing great. She asked if we were almost done and I told her how far we had to go. We were coming up on a hill so I told her to take it easy so she doesn't use all her energy. She said "I want to stop!" I told her she could stop and walk for a little bit if she wanted to. I don't think she knew she could. She did stop, but only for a few seconds. I told her she was doing a great job. We made it up the hill and she said again she was tired and are we almost done. I said almost! After that she was behind me.

We were almost to the end! I came down a hill which was nice, turned left and up a little incline...which felt big! I knew I just had to get to the flat part, turn the corner, and run to the finish. At this point I was tired! I wanted a better finish than the last race, so I told myself to just run to the corner and then kick it into high gear to the finish. Right before the corner a lady passed me. But I ran so fast and hard to the finish, I passed her! It was like a race between the two of us. People were cheering! It was so fun! I finished!!

I didn't know my time because the race clock was the 10K time. I just knew when I finished, the clock said 30 something. I caught my breath, walked around, had some water, grabbed a banana, and then waited for S to come in.

After the race we found the Hubby and kiddos. They showed up because my S was doing the toddler trot! We got the kids in the stroller and headed back to the race area. At this point the results were being posted.

I finished in 25 minutes 57 seconds! A new PR!! I was 71 out of 366! And I finished 3rd in my age group!! I was pumped! S also got a PR!

Me and S after the race.

The runners with the race sign.

Then we waited for the toddler trot to start. I stretched out and S stretched for her race. :)

Me and S before her race.

They started with 9 and 10 year olds and worked their way down. So we got to see the other kids race. Then it was our turn! A lot of parents ran with their 3-year-olds.

And we're off!

S had so much fun! She even skipped into the finish! So funny! She got a medal and other little prizes.

I had a great race and I can't wait for the next one!

I just....ate a bug!

That is a quote from one of my all-time favorite movies, Overboard. Goldie Hawn is in the back of a pick-up and she says, "I just...ate a bug!" So hilarious! Why am I quoting Goldie? Cause I ate my first bug while running this morning! Well, really I just sucked it in while breathing. I'll get to the details soon.

It's been a couple days, so let's see if I stuck to my workout plan.

Wednesday: I took my X-Bike class and then ran 2 miles on the treadmill. I had a fabulous workout!

Thursday: I took Boot Camp. Yes, the instructor showed up! After work I did my lunges. And then after the boys were down, S and I did our Hard CORE workout. She is so funny doing them with me. On one of the moves she said "Are we almost done yet? I'm getting tired!" It's so funny cause she isn't really doing the move. She's doing her version. I will have to take pics of this soon.

Today: So I had my 4-mile run planned for this morning. Last night I layed out my clothes and Garmin. When the alarm went off, I wasn't really ready to get up. But I did! I got dressed, put on my Garmin, took some pics, and took off.

Pre-Run ~ Rocking my Deshler Designs Headband I won from Tonya!

I really liked the headband. It's cute and fits well. Usually headbands will not stay on my head. I can never wear the little rubber band looking ones. They just pop right off. The velvet backing on this headband really kept it in place for my run. It shifted a little by the end of my run, but it didn't pop off or need adjusted at all.

Modeling my running outfit.

I decided to wear my new running capris I got a couple months ago. It's starting to be a little cooler in the mornings...which is nice! It was my first time wearing them and I really liked them. As you can see they have great reflecting stripes.

I had a really great run! I felt fabulous the entire time. I went nice and easy. I have my 5K on Sunday so I didn't want to overdue it today. Oh, and I forgot my MP3 player again! What is with me? I was not about to go back in the house and wake everyone up so I went musicless again. It is nice not having to mess around with the headphones.

About 0.5 mile in is where I inhaled the bug. I swear a mile later that thing was trying to crawl back out. I started coughing like something was stuck in my throat. So weird. The coughing finally stopped around 2 miles. But on my way to work it started back up again! And this time, I'm pretty sure I coughed the sucker up! Yuck!

When I was nearing the end of my run, I still felt great. I definitely could have kept going. That makes me feel good for next week when I run 4.5 miles.

All done!

Like I said, I took it easy today. Here are my splits.
Mile 1: 9:58
Mile 2: 10:09
Mile 3: 10:11
Mile 4: 9:45

I tried picking up my pace the last half mile and you can see that I actually did.

Tomorrow is my off day and I can't wait! I've been working hard for the last 7 days! Sunday is the 5K and I'm really excited! My friend S is running it too and we are going after work to pick up our race packets. I am pretty sure this race is chip timed, so that will be my first experience with that. I will try to take lots of pics. So look for my race report by Monday!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Man am I lucky!

Ok, first things first....my workout for the day.

I got up to go to the Y and take my Boot Camp class. But what do ya know...the instructor bailed again! Now, the instructor who bailed the past 2 Mondays is different than my Tuesday instructor. Tuesday Instructor has a history of not showing. Her class participant count shows for it. There have been only about 4 people for weeks. There would have been just 4 of us today. I was annoyed, but just went to X-Bike class. I am so glad I have that to fall back on. The X-Bike class had a different intstructor. She was hard. After class I went up and did the elliptical until it said I burned 100 calories. Then I went and did my lunges for the Lunges Challenge and some arms. I had a pretty good workout, but I do miss my Tuesday Boot Camp. Maybe next week! I will do my Hard CORE workout this evening. I would have done it this morning, but I don't have it memorized yet.

My next 5K race is just 5 days away! I'm getting excited! Kind of nervous too. I want a new PR, but for some reason I think I won't be able to do it. But I'm pretty sure this race is way flatter than the other one. Also, I think this race is going to be much bigger. There is a 10K too. And afterwards there is a Toddler Trot! I signed S up. I'm really excited for that. She'll get her first race t-shirt! I really wanted to have a Clif Bar to eat the morning of the race. So yesterday I found some at the store. I tried one this morning for breakfast and loved it! White Chocolate Macadamia Nut. YUM! The other one is Chocolate Chip or something. I'll eat that race morning.

Clif Bar for breakfast at work.

And why am I so lucky? Cause I won Stacie's Nuu Muu Giveaway! Holy cow! It must be because it's my birthday month! :)

Week 4 Run 1

Another run down!

Yesterday I did my Lunges Challenge and my Hard CORE Club challenge...along with stretching. For the lunges I did 20 lunges on each side and then I did two sets of pulsing lunges for a count of 10. I was definitely feeling it afterwards! In the evening I did the Hard CORE Challenge. I actually tried it out once last week, so it was my second time. I really like it. It's a great core workout. The side bridge is the hardest for me. I count to 30 really fast. :) I also have a partner...my daughter S! She'll try to do the moves with me and count. It's so funny.

This morning I headed to the Y. I kept going back and forth on what I would do. Choice 1 was to take Boot Camp (1 hour) and then run my 3 miles tonight. Choice 2 was to take X-Bike (30 minutes) and then run my 3 miles on the treadmill right after. Deep down I wanted to bike and run. But I'm weird about missing Boot Camp. But then I'd tell myself that I take Boto Camp two other days during the week, so it would be good to bike and run. Well, I got there and the instructor bailed again! So my decision was made! I was really happy with it. So I X-Biked for a half hour and then ran 3 miles on the treadmill. About 2 miles in I got a huge cramp. At the same time the incline went way higher. I was having a tough time, so I lessened the incline and speed a tad and the cramp went away. So I am done for the day!

I know my schedule for the week looks busy and crazy. I tried almost that schedule last week and I really liked it. I liked going to the Y 4 days last week. Usually I will have Fridays off, so it just looks a little crazy with my run on Friday. Plus it's busier with my Lunges and Core challenge. But I'll make it work. I think next week will be easier because my Y is on shut down. So here is to a busy workout week!

This weekend we celebrated my Mom's birthday!
Here's a pic of my and my Mama!

Week 3 Run 3

Today was my long 4-mile run. I ran at 10 am. It was about 75 degrees and not humid. Nice! It was really breezy too.

I got ready and headed out. As I was running, I felt like I was missing something. I was halfway down the street when I realized what I forgot...my MP3 player! Duh! I was not about to go back, so I ran without music. It really wasn't bad at all. I got to hear my surroundings instead...like cars, the wind, lawn mowers, bugs. I kind of liked it!

I felt great...especially at the beginning. But my route gets harder the further I go. I really wanted to concentrate on not running as fast at the beginning. I was successful and my first mile was 9:06. My second was 9:25. My third was 9:55. The third mile is a pretty steady climb, but not too steep. The first half of the 4th mile is a steep hill. I really pushed hard the last half mile and my 4th mile was 9:25. I had a really great run!

Pretty Awesome!

I joined Daily Mile one month ago on July 12. In one month I've ran 38 miles! I think that is pretty amazing! Never would I have thought that I would run 38 miles in one month!

I can't wait to see how many I run from today until September 12th!

And for more awesomeness....I won Racing with Babes' Deshler Designs giveaway! Woot woot!!

Oh! And thanks for the nice stems complements. :)

Workout Challenges

Challenge #1

Amanda from 5 Miles Past Emtpy has issued a Legs Love Lunges Challenge and I have accepted!

The challenge is take photos of your legs and post them on your blog. Then from August 10th to September 10th you are to do lunges 3 days a week. Then when you're done, take photos of your legs again and then we'll see if we can see a difference. Sounds fun!

So, here are my legs! (Don't mind my bruises and bug bites!)

Challenge #2

Jamoosh from Last Mile Lounge has issued a 13-week challenge to a stronger core.

We official start Sunday and it goes until Saturday, November 13th. There will be a designated workout and you can choose to do it either 2 or 3 times per week. If you're interested, there is still time to sign up!

I am super excited for these challenges! I can't wait to see any improvements I might get!

Week 3 Run 2

I really liked the X-Bike class on Monday, so I got up and took it again this morning! It was a little harder this time. The instructor did harder moves. And, my bike was tough! I used a different bike than on Monday because that bike was directly under the air conditioning and right in front of a fan. I don't like that cause I love to sweat! So I moved today. Well, the bikes have resistance clicks. A normal bike probably has 9 or 10 and it slightly gets harder. My bike today had like 4! I could barely peddle after just 4 clicks and it wouldn't go any further than that. Not like I would have been able to move. So it was a tough class and I was drenched after!

After that I went to the treadmills and got my 2-mile run in for the day. I pushed it harder today cause I knew what I was doing with the treadmill. I really enjoyed it. I wonder if everyone else could hear my breathing?

Here I am...worked out, cleaned up, and headed to work!

Pilates

I tried a new class this morning! Pilates!

I've never taken a Pilates class before. I never really was interested. I'm more of a high intensity workout kind of girl. I don't like Yoga at all, so never really thought of trying Pilates (not that they're the same). Well with the back pain I was having the last two weeks, I decided last week that I would try Pilates. I actually skipped my Boot Camp class and went to a different Y so I could take the Pilates class.

It is sooooo different than Boot Camp. It's like a 180! I walked in to a dim room with mood music. I'm used to bright lights and super loud bass thumping music. And no one was wearing shoes! I got my mat and took off my shoes. The instructor noticed me and knew I was new to class. She was really nice. She asked if I had ever taken Pilates before. I told her no. She set me up with another mat and a block. E took it with me too. So there were a total of 7 people in the room.

Class was 45 minutes and it seemed to go by fast. I did enjoy it. I would do it again. Nothing was really tough for me. But I can't do it every week. Maybe once a month or something. After I was done, I didn't feel like I worked out. I wasn't sweaty at all. I like to sweat. Then I know I worked hard and got a good workout in. I know this is a completely different class and it's more stretching...which is what I wanted for my back. I know I'll probably be sore from some of the stuff tomorrow, which will be good.

So, I did like it and will probably do it again...but not weekly. Now I can't wait for Boot Camp on Thursday!

Tomorrow I have a 2-mile run. I decided I'm going to go to the Y again and take the 30-minute X-Bike class and then run 2 miles...either on the treadmill or outside.

If you are ever thinking of trying a new class or a group class for the first time...go for it! I know I'm chicken about going for the first time and I like to go with someone, but really, the people there are nice and will help out. I got to class this morning way before E...I didn't think she was going to show. But the instructor was really nice and set me up. So as I've been doing this week...get out and try new things! It's fun!

Trying New Things

Hello Week 3!

I've mentioned before that I take a Boot Camp class at my Y Tuesdays and Thursdays. Well there is a class Mondays too. So I decided to get up and take it this morning. The class starts at 5:45 am. So I woke up, got ready, walked into the Y, and there was a sign saying class was cancelled! What?!?!? I had a feeling that was gonna happen. I was annoyed! But, other girls that take class were going to take the X-Bike class instead. I've never done it before and I'm a chicken when it comes to going to new classes. I feel like I'm not gonna know what I'm doing. But they said they would show me how to do it, so I decided to give it a shot. It's only 30 minutes too...where Boot Camp is a full hour. Well, it was tough! And it was awesome! I think my legs are going to be super sore tomorrow. I'm glad I took it because now the next time an insturctor bails, I can take that class instead.

Because class was only 30 minutes, I had time to get today's run in this morning. I decided to try out the treadmill because I didn't have my Garmin with me. It was weird at first figuring out my speed, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. E was with me so she showed me how to work the treadmill. I got in a great 2.5-mile run and then I did a cool down walk for a couple minutes.

So it's been an interesting morning with trying out two new things...the X-bike and a treadmill run! Super fun though and I was super drenched at the end! I feel fab and it's nice to know I got my run done with for the day!

Week 2 Run 3

I did my 3.5-mile run yesterday morning. It was so nice out. It was warm in the sun, but not humid. The run was kind of hard for me though. I think I started off way too fast. I always seem to want to go as fast as I can, but I don't think that's what I should be doing. This might be too much info, but I was pretty spitty. It seemed at times that I was going to choke because I couldn't swallow my spit. Weird. I think I should have had water with me and I would have been ok.

Here are my run stats:
Mile 1: 8:43
Mile 2: 9:01
Mile 3: 9:47
Last 0.5-mile: 4:46

10KT Week 3

Here is my schedule for Week 3 of my 10K training.

Sunday ~ Stretch & Strengthen
Monday ~ 2.5-mile run
Tuesday ~ Boot Camp
Wednesday ~ 2-mile run & strength
Thursday ~ Boot Camp
Friday ~ Rest
Saturday ~ 4-mile run

Woo hoo...a 4-mile long run!

Random Facts

Abbi from Higher Miles did a post of random facts about herself and tagged any of her followers to play along if they'd like, so I figured I'd join in on the fun!

Random Facts about Rae

1. My real first name is Rae Anne. Two words. And no, Anne is not my middle name. I don't have a middle name. A lot of my family and friends call me Rae, so I like to go by that around these parts.

2. I have a degree in Mathematics. I am technically a Mathematician. So I guess I'm a nerd. I work as a Mathematician/Editor at a textbook company.

3. I love photography and taking pictures. I take my Nikon D40X everywhere we go. I document every outing my family has. I have probably taken 561,579,341 pictures of each of my kids and they are only 3 and 1!

4. I've known Hubby since 3rd grade. We lived a street apart and were friends growing up. We started dating in 11th grade and have been together ever since...over 13 years and married for over 7 of them! He's the best and I'm a super lucky girl!

5. The Hubby and I had trouble getting pregnant. We did IVF and were blessed with our daughter, S. Two years later we did an FET (frozen embryo transfer) and were blessed with our boys, R & J. We are so lucky!

The Fam (This picture is almost a year old.)

6. I am a huge klutz. I am constantly walking into things, cutting corners too close, you name it. I always have a bruise somewhere from this.

7. I hate coffee. Well, I hate the smell of coffee, therefore I've never had a cup of coffee and I never will.

8. I don't think cooking is fun. I will cook to feed the fam, but I don't do it cause I love it. Thankfully Hubby likes to cook and is excellent at it. He can just whip something right up and it's fabulous. Me? I have to use a recipe. I have a handful that I always make, yet each time I still need to get the recipe out. And I never stray from recipes. I get teased for that.

9. I absolutely loved being pregnant. I loved everything about it. Hubby said I was a good pregnant woman. I also loved the labor and delivery part. But no, I will not be doing it again. :)

10. I love to dance! I just love going out with friends and/or family and dancing the night away.

Cupid Shuffle Baby! Oh, and that's my sis-in-law E to my left.

You are all more than welcome to play too! Happy Friday!

Week 2 Run 2

I did my second run of the week yesterday evening. It was 2 miles. It was so humid out. I ran around 8:30 and as soon as I stepped outside, the air was thick. After just 2 miles, I was a sweaty mess...but I love that!

2-Mile Run Stats

Look at the sweat on my hand!

This morning I took my Boot Camp class. It was really good. I worked really hard.

I'm looking forward to my 3.5-mile run on Saturday!

Thanks for the headphone tips. I used my other ones last night without any problems. But if they start really bothering me, I'm going to look into getting ones that have the thing that go around your ear.

Week 2 Run 1

I hurt my back again Sunday afternoon. It's still been sore all week, but not really that bad. I was outside with S and we were playing in the pool. I went to lay on a blanket for a little bit. When I went to get up, I was in some major pain again....just from laying flat! So annoying! Sunday was a stretching day. I did some, but just took it easy. Yesterday I was supposed to run 2.5 miles. I planned on it. But right before I was going to run, I decided I should rest a little longer. So I changed my run to the morning. I would skip my Boot Camp class and run instead.

I got up this morning for my run. My back was feeling better than the day before.

Here is the pretty sunrise.

Ready for my run. Got my new Garmin and my new headphones!

I only had to do 2.5 miles today. It was a nice morning. Warm, but not hot. Not too humid yet. The sky was really pretty. I stretched and started my run. I felt great my whole run, my back didn't bother me. But let me tell you what did...my new headphones!

At the beginning of my blog when I started running, I would complain about my headphones. They would fall out sometimes. So I got a new pair of marshmallow ones. I was excited to use them. Well, they were horrible! They fell out every 5 seconds. I spent the first mile of my run putting them back in, or holding them in. I was swearing at them as I was running. Thankfully it was early and nobody was around. I was pinching them and then putting them in and they still fell out. After about a mile one ear fell out and I just let it hang there, then of course the next one did. So finally I was like screw this! I just took them out and held them the rest of the run and ran without music. This, I was not a fan of...I like my tunes! So I have come to the conclusion that I have small ears...or small ear drums or a canal...or whatever. So I'm going back to my other headphones. I can handle having to put them in maybe once or twice a run. I was going to give my father-in-law my old ones...now he can have the new marshmallow ones. I think he'll look good in pink!

Boo! Thumbs down to new headphones!

Here are the stats of my run....from my new Garmin!!

After run glow.

I still plan on doing my 2-mile run tomorrow as well as some abs and arms. I'm hoping this stupid back pain goes away for good!
